Why flexible working isn’t the answer.

I thought I was prepared returning to work after being on maternity leave with my daughter.

How wrong I was!

We had the childcare sorted and I had flexible working in place. Surely I just had to make sure I was organised and off we go? That initial confidence soon fizzled out. I was in the same building, at the same desk doing the same work but I wasn’t the same person.

I’d felt confident in my pre-baby days at work - so sure of who I was and what I wanted. A career path mapped out and self-assured in my abilities. I knew what success looked and felt like.

Crying in the toilets in those first weeks back I felt so lost, alone and confused. I thought I just needed to push through and get used to the new routine and I’d be fine. But I wasn’t.
